Weekend Predictions: 'The Devil Inside'

Featured Stories - on January 04, 2012 by Phil Contrino

devilinsidepred.pngA thriller about demonic possession should have no problem claiming the #1 spot at the box office this weekend.

With The Devil Inside, Paramount is clearly aiming for the same moviegoers who turned the Paranormal Activity franchise into a massive success. Unfortunately, as The Weinstein Company found out with Apollo 18, the genre is not fool-proof. Apollo 18 generated only $18 million domestically after opening this past August. Yet thanks to a healthy online following, it looks like TDI will be able to beat that total during its first weekend alone. The trailer for TDI has generated plenty of buzz on both Facebook and Twitter since hitting the Internet, and conversations are intensifying with the release just days away.

As of 2 p.m. PT, Fandango reports that TDI is responsible for 8% of daily sales. That's not bad considering that holdovers from the end of 2010 are dominating sales. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo leads with 13% today.

Look for The Devil Inside to grab $23 million from more than 2,000 locations.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is expanding to around 800 locations this weekend after delivering solid numbers in platform release. The espionage flick is being overshadowed a bit when it comes to Oscar talk, but there's still plenty of buzz for Gary Oldman's performance. A weekend haul of around $4 million looks likely.
