Long Range Forecast: 'A Good Day to Die Hard', 'Beautiful Creatures', 'Escape from Planet Earth' & 'Safe Haven'
Featured Stories - on December 22, 2012 by BOXOFFICE Staff
Joining our Long Range Forecast this week are four new releases planned for the week of Valentine's Day and weekend preceding President's Day. Beautiful Creatures is scheduled to open on Wednesday, February 13 while A Good Day to Die Hard, Escape from Planet Earth and Safe Haven are planned for Thursday, February 14 releases.
Beautiful Creatures
PROS:
- Adapted from a well-known young adult novel.
- Being released in time for Valentine's Day should provide a boost.
CONS:
- Will face competition from Safe Haven and Side Effects for Valentine's Day audiences.
- Could be viewed as trying too hard to feel like Twilight.
- The film's leads are largely unknown.
A Good Day to Die Hard
PROS:
- Live Free or Die Hard grossed $134.5 million in 2007 and was fairly well received.
- Will have the added benefit of playing in IMAX locations.
- There are quite a few films aimed at female audiences this February. A Good Day to Die Hard should serve as an alternative choice.
- Will hope to ride the recent wave of long-running action franchises being revitalized at the box office (i.e. James Bond and Mission: Impossible).
CON:
- Could the fifth film of the franchise be one film too many?
Escape from Planet Earth
PROS:
- There are very few options for family audiences in January and February 2013.
CONS:
- Lower profile sci-fi animated films tend to have lackluster box office performances.
- The Weinstein Company has relatively limited experience with animated fare.
- There will be a number of higher profile options for families in March. Holding power could be softer than usual for a family film released during Presidents Day weekend.
Safe Haven
PROS:
- Being adapted from a Nicholas Sparks novel is typically a recipe for success at the box office.
- Will be a strong option for couples on Valentine's Day.
CONS:
- Will face competition from Beautiful Creatures and Side Effects for Valentine's Day audiences.
- Julianne Hough and Josh Duhamel don't have the same level of drawing power as the leads of many previous film adaptations of Sparks' novels.
- Due in part to Valentine's Day, it could be the weekend's most front-loaded film.
Notable changes on our forecast this week include Django Unchained, Les Miserables, Parental Guidance and Zero Dark Thirty.
