jul18.pngThe weekend of July 18 sees the wide release of three new films.

Planes: Fire and Rescue

- The first film was a surprise hit for Disney, taking in over $90 million domestically.
- Based on the Cars brand, kids are still very into the franchise as a whole.
- The lack of any breakout animations this summer could create some extra demand for this.

- Capitalizing on the Cars brand once already, and making the leap from direct-to-video status, was the first film's theatrical success just a fluke?
- The lack of breakout animations this summer could also back up the possibility that this one falls in line with the trend.
- Social media activity has been generally unhealthy across the board.

The Purge: Anarchy

- The first flick was one of last summer's sleeper hits, debuting to an impressive $34.1 million.
- Social media activity has been generally healthy for the sequel.
- Horror fans haven't had much to get excited about in 2014, as has shown by the genre's underperformers of the year so far.

- With only another $30.4 million earned after opening weekend, the first film had generally negative word of mouth--even by front-loaded horror standards.
- Competition from Sex Tape could cut into the crucial 20-something audience.
- Are horror fans simply burnt out after a very busy year for the genre in 2013?

Sex Tape

- Cameron Diaz, Jason Segel, and director Jake Kasdan turned Bad Teacher into a hit three years ago.
- Flixster activity are Facebook generally healthy, though modest compared to the likes of Neighbors and 22 Jump Street.
- Raunchy R-rated comedies have a good history at the summer box office.

- Twitter activity is underwhelming compared to Tammy and Neighbors.
- With a number of comedies in the market already this summer, audiences may be burned out on the genre for the time being.
- Early reviews don't suggest strong word of mouth.
