Weekend Forecast: 'Chappie', 'Unfinished Business', & 'The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel'

mar6.pngThe first weekend of March sees three new wide releases hit the market.

Chappie

PROS:

- Writer/director Neill Blomkamp has a growing fan base thanks to District 9 and, to a lesser extent, Elysium.
- Flixster and Twitter activity have shown steady growth over the past few months.
- The cast of well-known names and faces like Hugh Jackman and Sigourney Weaver could help.

CONS:

- Facebook activity, while decent, is noticeably behind that of Elysium.
- Sci-fi films without a large scale tend to open somewhat modestly.
- Neither Jackman nor Weaver are considered main characters here, leaving the selling point mostly up to the concept.

Unfinished Business

PROS:

- The trio of Vince Vaughn, Tom Wilkinson, and Dave Franco could appeal to young males looking for a comedy.
- The lack of a comedy hit in awhile could further help.

CONS:

- Vaughn hasn't driven a major box office hit in quite awhile.
- The days of the "frat pack" comedy may be behind us in the wake of more successful comedy concepts like the 21 Jump Street series, which Franco co-starred in.
- Social media activity is dead on arrival with Twitter pacing 50 percent behind The Wedding Ringer and a mere 12,000 Facebook fans.

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

PROS:

- The first film proved extremely leggy thanks to great word of mouth, generating over $46 million in mostly limited and semi-wide release.
- The return of the ensemble cast should bolster incoming goodwill.

CONS:

- Social media hasn't been one of the sequel's strong points, although that's to be expected given the older target audience.
- The late decision for a wide release could result in more backloading than is typical for many sequels.
