Dwayne Johnson enters the mass destruction genre with San Andreas, a new flick from director Brad Peyton (Journey 2: The Mysterious Island). Will San Andreas connect with summer moviegoers looking for a special-effects extravaganza? This week BoxOffice takes a closer look at the film's prospects.

San Andreas
(Warner Bros.)

PROS:

- Dwayne Johnson will be fresh off the success of Furious 7 when this opens.
- Journey 2: The Mysterious Island turned into a solid global hit, so it's clear that Johnson and Peyton work well together.
- It's been five years since Roland Emmerich's 2012 turned mass destruction into box office gold, so the genre is due for another entry.

CONS:

- Johnson stumbled commercially last summer with Hercules. It's hard to erase the memory of that.
- 2012 boasted a more robust ensemble cast than San Andreas.
- Opening after Mad Max: Fury Road could be a real challenge.
