Weekend Forecast: 'The Transporter Refueled' & 'A Walk In the Woods'

Featured Stories - on September 02, 2015 by BoxOffice Staff

sep4pred.pngThe first full weekend of September, and summer's last official frame, sees the release of just two new wide releases for Labor Day weekend. Our analysis:

The Transporter Refueled

PROS:

- The first three films found relative success and provided a stable franchise vehicle for original star Jason Statham.
- The franchise boasts a healthy 2.5 million fans of Facebook going into release weekend.

CONS:

- With Statham sitting this film out, it's very questionable whether many fans of the action series will show up. Even his last entry in the franchise saw diminishing returns with the most recent 2008 film.
- Twitter and Flixster activity leave much to be desired with both falling behind the levels of Hitman: Agent 47.

A Walk In the Woods

PROS:

- Robert Redford, Nick Nolte, and Emma Thompson could be able to draw out older audiences looking for an adult drama over the holiday weekend.
- Social media activity is moderately ahead of And So It Goes.

CONS:

- Unfortunately, reviews are leaning negative, which could limit that target adult crowd.
- With a somewhat under-the-radar release, awareness is pretty low.

Top 10 Forecast

BoxOffice is forecasting a $69 million tally for the top ten films over the four-day portion of the extended Labor Day weekend. That would mark a 36 percent decline from 2014's $107.2 million four-day Labor Day weekend (which notably fell one week earlier on the calendar than it does this year).
